Youth Turkey Season recently opened, and Layne Westberry had a day to remember. Westberry not only killed his first turkey, but the turkey had four beards.
Turkey beards are plumes of dark brown or black feathers — more hair-like than a typical feather — that protrude from the bird’s chest.
“When it came out, I was so excited, I was shaking,” said Westberry. “It was puffed up and strutting around for a while, then I shot it, and it flopped down. I was so happy, I didn’t know what to do.”
“When I saw it had four beards, it was the best - because that means I beat my daddy,” said Westberry.
