Canton High School (CHS) tenth-grader Shamiyah Jones recently won first place in the ninth- to twelfth-grade division of the Madison County Soil & Water Conservation District (MCS&WCD) Art Poster Contest. CHS art teacher Lisa Phillips accepted the award on Jones’ behalf and said she was very proud of her student.
In 2019, the MCS&WCD decided to be a part of the National Association of Conservation Districts’ (NACD) Poster Contest. In 2020, the group had two categories that included grades two through six and received great participation.
For 2023, MCS&WCD invited all grades K-12 to participate, with a poster theme of “One Water.” MCS&WCD provided the poster board.
For the county level, contest awards included first, second and third place winners, with prizes of $50, $30, and $20, respectively. Jones will go on to compete at the state level.
