Tigers looking to turn things around

Tigers looking to turn things around

The Canton Tigers varsity football team has started their season with a record of 1-3, with two losses coming against district opponents: Callaway and Vicksburg. The Tigers are currently in seventh place in Class 5A, region two.

Despite these losses, Head Coach Calvin Bolton said he is optimistic about the rest of the season.

“We still have a chance to turn this thing around and make the playoffs,” said Bolton. “We have to improve on being better teammates to each other. We have the tools, but we have to hone in on those things and consistently get better. Our guys and our coaching staff believe, but we have to correct some things if we want to make it to the playoffs.”

The Tigers’ road to the playoffs will not be an easy one. With teams such as Holmes County and Ridgeland still left to play on the schedule, the Tigers will have to show their grit in these face-offs.

Bolton has been without several players due to numerous issues. Playing with his full roster for the first time allowed the team to truly prove what they are capable of.

“Last night against Callaway was the first time we had all of our roster available. We haven’t had all of our players due to sickness and disciplinary issues. I believe that now we will be able to put everything together and become a better team,” said Bolton.

Although Bolton and his team will have to help the returning players get adapted quickly, he is very proud of his coaches and his players who have played the whole season.

“Our guys put in the work week in and week out,” said Bolton. “I have seen them improve each and every week, which means we are heading in the right direction. The coaching staff has been great so far. To know that our coaches and our players are working really hard week in and week out makes me very proud.

The Tigers will be looking to turn things around in their district. They will play a district opponent every game for the rest of the season. Their opponents include Holmes County High School, Neshoba Central High School, Forest Hill High School, Jim Hill High School, Provine High School, and Ridgeland High School.

While the journey won’t be easy, Bolton believes that his athletes have everything it takes to get things back on track.
