After the successful implementation of a brand new summer reading program last year, the Canton Academy English Department is continuing to bring a variety of books to its upper school students.
While elementary Panthers are still assigned the traditional required reading per grade, the junior high and high school English faculty knew there needed to be options.
“Our former English Chair, Courtney Warren, saw a need for diversity in the summer reading options,” said English teacher and IT director Nathan McCloskey. “We came together and made a list of twenty books for the junior high students and twenty books for the high school students.”
Allowing students options and removing a summer reading test, McCloskey said, has made students a lot more open to summer reading.
“It worked out perfectly! No one likes to be told what to read, which is what we do with them all year long. Allowing them to have options and find something they enjoy made them more excited.”
“They also were able to express themselves through a summer reading project. Each grade has a specific project to complete rather than taking a test, and they presented their projects the first week of school. It was a lot of fun,” said McCloskey.
After the introduction of book options, the 2022 summer reading list was improved even more.
“We wanted to ensure that students were still reading your typical classic. Right after spring break, we made a few tweaks to the summer reading. Every student will read one required book and then will choose one from the list. The list now has even more options and includes fiction, nonfiction, mystery, graphic novels and more. We want to make sure they enjoy what they read but also get what they need from these books,” said McCloskey.
With summer in full swing and one month left, books are being opened as Panthers dive into their summer reading.
