Special to The Canton News
Gloria Bilbrew always wanted to be a postal worker, and, today, she is the Postmaster in Canton, where she was born and raised.
“Customers come into the Post Office and say they remember me when I was a little girl,” Bilbrew said.
Bilbrew began her 33-year career as a Rural Carrier Associate (RCA) in Jackson. Initially, she only wanted part-time work; and the RCA position, which guaranteed one day a week, seemed a good fit for a married woman and mother of four young boys.
“I had left a full-time job to work one day a week at the Post Office,” Bilbrew said. “Coming to the U.S. Postal Service was the best decision.”
Five years later, she became a regular Rural Carrier, and the rest is history. Bilbrew recalls being one of the first females to be promoted as an Operations Support Specialist and Address Management Specialist at the district office in Jackson. She also worked as a Quality Improvement Specialist.
Bilbrew encourages employees to network. She was a member of the United Postmasters and Managers of America (UPMA) National Diversity Committee (2019-2021) and was a guest diversity speaker at the 2021 UPMA National Convention.
