Truly’s position solidified by the court

By Courtney Warren
A Madison County jury ruled in favor of William Truly in an election challenge brought by his Republican opponent Chip Matthews.

The jury found that the proper Canton Municipal Democratic Executive Committee and that the Canton Municipal Election Commission had not qualified Truly or Matthews prior to the general election or certified the results.

However, the jury ruled that the failure to follow those proper procedures did not influence the election, and that, because Truly received more votes, he was the duly elected mayor.
According to Mayor Truly, “We will move forward. I’m glad this is behind us. There never should have been a trial, but it’s now over. We are moving forward with several projects. We have to address the issue of gun violence by bringing cameras to businesses and lightening up the city and in high-crime areas. We want our citizens and visitors to feel safe and secure in Canton.”
“We are excited Amazon is here and bringing jobs to Canton. We are looking at major housing projects, as well.”

With a focus on bringing the violence in the city to a halt and making residents feel safe, Truly said he believes the future is bright for the City of Canton.
