Special to The Canton News
GirlScout troops and volunteers come up with a community-inspired goal to make a difference. Girls use their GSPromise and GSLaw and incorporate this into their project, to make it sustainable and gain knowledge of how to help others around the world.
The community and girls work together to help girls achieve the highest honor a GirlScout Junior can earn, which is the Bronze Award.
Girls were given a task to look on their travels to notice community needs.
Scouts discussed bent signs, always overflowing recycling, debris-filled cemeteries, and much more.
The girls decided that recycling could help communities and wildlife. Scouts talked to different ones who came to recycle their items, learning that everyone has a different reason why they do their part.
Teaching the community how to leave no trace was their overall goal. “Leave No Trace” means to leave a place better than you found it and help keep communities cleaner while respecting wildlife.
There are three recycling locations in Canton.
One location is on Highway 51 by the Sheriff’s Department, one is across from the Canton Courts, and one is located where the old hospital was on Highway 16. Each canister has info for what belongs inside. When items are mixed into a canister, the entire contents are no longer recyclable. That’s why Scouts say it is important to know the locations and understand how to separate accordingly for “Leave No Trace.”
