Canton Police Department hosts first Junior Police Academy

By Courtney Warren

The City of Canton Police Department (CPD) recently hosted its very first Junior Academy.

This event was free for youth ages eight through fourteen and was held at Mt. Zion Recreational Center.

CPD covered several lessons with the Junior Cadets over the course of a week.

The Junior Cadets got a tour of the Madison County Detention Center and Canton Municipal Court.

Investigator Sergeant Gooden spoke to the Cadets about the two categories of crimes and types of crimes that he investigates.

Officers Esco and Smoots taught the Cadets about the importance of CPR/first aid as well as how to properly perform the Heimlich maneuver. All Junior Cadets became CPR-certified.

The department thanked Mt. Zion MB Church of Canton for allowing them to use their facilities for the free event and Uplift Incorporated and EKK Omega Men for being sponsors.
