Old Jail Farmers Market returns

By Guest Columnist Misty Slay

In the spring of 2022, a couple of ladies with a vision, Maureen Simpson and Joy Foy, and a handful of neighbors who knew absolutely nothing about running a farmers market set out to do exactly that. Over the next few months, plans were made, signs and posters were printed, sponsors came on board, and word went out that a new market was coming to the grounds of the historic Old Jail in Canton.

The farmers market has changed a bit since that first drizzly market on May 24, 2022, but the mission has stayed the same. The Old Jail Farmers Market seeks to be the place where local growers can sell the prettiest, freshest produce, flowers, and plants around. We’re always looking for local vendors!  Young or old, whether you grow acres of row crops or in buckets on your back patio, there’s a spot for you at the market. We want local artisans and bakers to bring their unique creations to share, and for everyone in our community to have access to the amazing offerings their neighbors and friends work hard to produce right here in our community. The farmers market will meet every Thursday in June and July (except for July 4th) from 4-7 p.m., and the vendor fee is just $10 for the whole summer!

We currently have vendors signed up to bring fresh veggies, flowers, eggs, baked goods, pottery, jams and jellies, snow cones, hand-crafted wood items and so much more!

So bring your kids, grab a neighbor, or just swing by on your way home from work and join us on the beautiful grounds of the Old Jail this summer for the 3rd season of the Old Jail Farmers Market. You’re welcome to bring a chair or blanket to hang out with friends and neighbors. We’ll see you there, rain or shine!
