CPSD board recognizes student-athletes

During their March Board meeting, the Canton Public School District Board of Trustees and Superintendent Gary Hannah recently honored the Canton High School boys basketball team for winning the Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) 5A Boys Basketball State Championship.


The Board congratulated the Tigers for defeating the Yazoo City Indians 58-40 to claim the MHSAA 5A Boys Basketball State Championship. 


The Board recognized Canton High Tiger Jamarion Fleming for being awarded the 2024 Basketball 5A Most Valuable Player (MVP) and the Scholar-Athlete awards and for being awarded the 2024 5A Mr. Basketball. Jamarion Fleming was also honored for receiving MVP in the North/South All-Star game, and Canton High Tiger DeAndre Lewis was applauded for representing Canton and his state in the Mississippi-Alabama All-Star game.


The Canton Lady Tigers were also recognized by the Board for being awarded the 5A Girls Basketball State Championship Runner-Up. The Lady Tigers fell short to the Laurel Lady Tornadoes, 40-32. 


Canton High Lady Tiger Caitlin Nelson was recognized for receiving the MHSAA 2024 Basketball 5A Scholar-Athlete Award.


The Board honored Canton High Lady Tiger Shamira Morton for being selected to First Team All-State, as well as congratulated Canton High Lady Tigers Na’Miya Davis, Shamira Morton and Kylei Rogers for being selected to the 2024 MHSAA All-State Tournament Team.


Nichols and Huey Porter Middle School girls’ and boys’ basketball teams were also commended for their district championship wins.
