Special to The Canton News
In Guthrie, Oklahoma, thousands of contestants compete all year to qualify for the National Little Britches Rodeo Association Finals. Kort Lyon, age 9, and upcoming fourth-grader at Canton Academy, recently competed in the Little Wrangler Division in barrels, poles, flags and goats. He was very successful in the local Mid South Little Britches Rodeo Association.
At The National Little Britches Rodeo Association Finals, Lyon finished the week as a World Champion Little Wrangler Barrel Racer. He was the only boy in the top ten in the world and the only one to run a pony (small horse). His pony’s name is Princess. She is little, but she can run with the fastest horses in the nation. He also ended up tenth in the world in flag racing and was the reserve all-around finals champion. He came home with a new world championship saddle, a gold buckle, $1,000 in scholarship money, and four other trophy buckles. Next year, he will move up to the junior division, where he will team rope and breakaway rope. His family hopes his six-year-old sister, Blakely, will follow in his footsteps.
