After several days of severe thunderstorms, lightning, and high-speed winds, thousands of people across the state were left without power. While many homeowners cleaned out hot refrigerators, recovered from fallen debris, and grappled with life after the storm, the government officials and departments that make up the City of Canton came together to ensure citizens were safe.
Canton Mayor Truly said, “We have to give a huge congratulations to CMU for the restoration of our outages and power. Congratulations to our departments. The police have maintained the traffic control during such a devastating time. Public Works truly worked hard. As you know, trees were knocked down, and lots of damage was done. We were able to move in with public works to restore qualities of life for many of our citizens.”
“We hate that one of our citizens lost their life as a consequence of this storm. Our prayers go out to Wilbert and his family. These are acts of God, and there is nothing we can do but pray,” said Truly. “When these impacts occur, that is the most important thing, to pray that no life is interrupted or disrupted.”
Melon Garrett, operational trainer and advisor for Public Works and Landfill Manager for the City of Canton said, “We worked together with CMU to clear the right-of-ways after they gave us clearance with electricity. We wanted to work safely and smart at the same time. Once they cleared us, we were able to move debris after the storm. We had to use chainsaws, backhoes, and knuckleboom trucks to move everything from the streets. From there, CMU was able to come in and reposition poles and wires and help people get back to their homes. We always partner together and get things done in a safe and protective manner.”
Canton Municipal Utilities General Manager Howard Young said, “We are truly appreciative of our customers for being patient as our crews worked tirelessly to restore power after the recent storm. There was a collaborative effort within all city departments to ensure power was restored safely. Together this combined effort continues to work for the good of the community, the city, and the county.”
As Cantonians continue to pick up the pieces, including the trampoline on the square, it’s no secret that a huge credit goes to the government departments for their efforts in the community.
